This book by the Russian writer and critic D.S. Merezhkovskii (1865-1941) includes thirteen critical essays. It is about authors of all times and countries whose books became lifetime companions for Merezhkovskii: from Marcus Aurelius to Dostoevskii, Tolstoi and Turgenev. This work, in the words of another Russian writer Boris Zaitsev, literally changed the understanding of these writers for many of their readers. Also included are Merezhkovskii`s literary portraits of 1880-1990s, his essay "On Reasons for the Fall and New Trends in Modern Russian Literature" which became a manifesto of early Russian symbolism, and reviews of the first edition of "Vechnye Sputniki" (1897). Comments (703-874). Name index.
