It is about authors of all times and countries whose books became lifetime companions for Merezhkovskii: from Marcus Aurelius to Dostoevskii, Tolstoi and Turgenev. This work, in the words of another Russian writer Boris Zaitsev, literally changed the understanding of these writers for many of their readers.
