Vladimir Semichastnyi (b. 1924), chairman of the KGB (1961-1967), lost his office after Svetlana Allilueva`s defection. Semichastnyi was a very active figure in Boris Pasternak`s battle over his novel Doctor Zhivago. Nikita Khrushchev was dismissed also with his help. This memoir is about his career, the role of the KGB in soviet life, and his life after the KGB. Illustrated with photographs from the Semichastnyi`s family album.
