Skrzhinskaia, E.Ch
Rus`, Italiia I Vizantiia v Srednevekov`e
[ Rus’, Italy and Byzantium in the Middle Ages]

Serie: Vizantiiskaia Biblioteka
Hardcover. Pocket size

The book includes several articles by the Russian historian and archivist, E.Ch. Skrzhinskaia (1897-1981), a major medievalist little known outside immediate professional circles. Her writings, marked by a profound knowledge of the subject and a rare literary talent, offer original interpretations of the sources. The article on the Turkic tribe of the Polovtsy reconsiders the origin of this tribe, and looks at the dramatic relationship between the invaders from the steppe, on the one hand, and Russia and Byzantium, on the other. Skrzhanskaia’s research does not support the view of O. Suleimenov about a Russian-Turkic alliance, but rather emphasizes the aggressive character of Turkic raids into the Kievan Rus’. Other articles in the book cover various sensitive aspects of Russian-Byzantine, Russian-Italian diplomacy of the 15th century including the marriage of Ivan III and Sofia Paleologue and the high hopes Italy laid upon the Russian role in regaining Constantinople . Attachments include the first Russian publication of documents from Venetian archives translated by Skrzhinskaia. Bibliographic references.
