The first volume The History of the Byzantine Empire is about the time before the crusades, prior to 1081. This edition is a reprint of the Russian version of 1923-1925 plus the latest additions to this work translated from English. A.A. Vasil`ev (1867-1953), one of the greatest Russian Byzantinologists, left Russia in 1925 and spent the rest of his life abroad. The second volume includes the list of Byzantine emperors, genealogical trees, bibliography (pp. 461-545), an article about the Vasil`ev Archive in Dumbarton Oaks (Washington), name index to both volumes.
