Pierre Gilliard (1879-1962), a Swiss by birth, spent about thirteen years as a teacher of French to the Russian royal family, including the time they spent in prison and the exile. He survived and wrote a book about the Romanov family in 1905-1918, illustrated with his own photographs "Le Destin Tragique de Nicolas II et de Famille". This volume includes a new translation of this book as well as a biographical essay about Pierre Gilliard by D. Girardin (pp. 3-96).
