The history of wars with Sweden (1700-1709) for access to the Baltic Sea by the famous Russian historian Evgenii Tarle (1874-1955) is still one of the most fundamental studies on the subject. Victory in this war made Russia an international power. Tarle wrote this book after WWII, no wonder that it has an apologetic character towards Peter the Great and Russia in general. According to the author`s plan The Northern War was part of a trilogy about the Russian fight against aggressors. This volume also includes an appendix, an article by S. Romanov, Russian Conquista (pp. 585-654), where he is trying to balance Tarle`s approach, and offers a different interpretation of many events during the twelve year war.
