This is a well known work on the history of the distinction between Eastern and Western Europe and how it was understood in the Age of Enlightenment and following. The monograph shows how this distinction was formed in the public mind by diplomats, writers, travelers and what was the image of Eastern Europe at that time. This book operates with what are called "mental maps" which combine geographical views with psychological pictures of "the other". One of the author`s conclusion about Russia, which sounds actual in modern discourse is that the country cannot change its image by itself: Russia did not place herself outside Europe, so it is not only up to Russia to change this image.
