The Lower Ob region holds much current interest for the history of material culture. The region around Obdorsk, now the city of Salekhard, was formerly a remote border zone that attracted southern and western cultures. The Obdorsk Fair, the climax of the annual cycle, was visited by many travelers from around the world in the 18th-19th centuries. This book is based on the Ostyak collection from the Museum of Anthropology at Moscow University collected by D.T. Yanovich in 1909. Contents: The History of the collection; Scientific finding of the excavation in 1991-1992; Historical economic context; Burial ritual; Dating and inventory of the burial ground; Ethnic interpretation of the results; Studies of cultural interaction in the "contact zone". 153 color and black-and-white illustrations. Appendices include documents related to the expedition of D.T. Yanovich in 1909. Extensive summary in English.
