The figure of the prime-minister of the Russian Empire (1906), Petr Stolypin still attracts a lot of attention from scholars and the reading public. As governor of Saratov he suppressed peasant uprisings during the Revolution of 1905 – 1907. In 1906 he proclaimed social and political reforms and initiated the reconstruction of agriculture. He proposed many important laws, including reforms of local governments, acts on mandatory elementary education and on religious tolerance. He was assassinated in 1911. Based on his personal documents and letters, some of never published, the author portrays the unique personality of one of the most interesting persons of Russia.
