This is a reprint of the book first published in 1881. Dmitrii Antonovich Skalon (1840-1919), born to an old French noble family, a military historian, aide to Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich, accompanied him on many of his trips, including his long tour to Turkey, Syria, Palestine and Egypt. This book is Skalon`s travel diary in which he described this tour, the people the Grand Duke met, and his retinue. Most of his retinue later participated in the military actions in the Balkans. This new edition is published in modern Russian orthography although it preserves capital letters in titles and geographical names as they were in 1872.
