This book commemorates the 125th anniversary of Feliks L`vovich Shapiro (1879-1961), lexicographer and teacher, the compiler of the first USSR Hebrew-Russian dictionary. It includes five works by Shapiro and memoirs about him by his colleagues and students, as well as other users of his works and dictionary. Teaching, studying and even more working on the Hebrew-Russian dictionary were heroic acts because the language itself was forbidden in Russia as the language of the new Jewish state Israel. Many teachers of Hebrew served sentences in soviet prisons. Appendices include short biographical sketches of teachers of Hebrew, list of Shapiro`s works, and some Hebrew terms.
