Lev Kopelev (1912-1997), a war veteran, Gulag surviver, and well-known dissident, first became known as the character Rubin in the Solzhenitsyn novel The First Circle, and then as a writer himself and a translator of German literature. This autobiographical novel about the Great Patriotic War was finished in 1973, published first abroad and only then in Russia in 1990.
