English poetry, from folk ballads to the Pre-Raphaelites in translation by one of the best Russian poets, mostly members of the literary group "Tsekh Poetov", compiled and edited by Nikolai Gumilev (1886-1921) is collected in this book. These translations were made on the order of the publisher Vsemirnaia Literatura (World Literature) founded by Maksim Gor`kii in 1918. Nikolai Gumilev had significant experience as a translator by that time, and wrote a kind of instruction for translators of poetry which introduces this collection.
