After her entry into the war against Turkey (1768-1774) Catherine the Great instituted a new order of St. George in 1769 with four degrees for military achievement. The first two degrees were for generals and admirals only. The order continued up to 1917 without any changes. This book includes biographies of the nine knights of this order, Russian Admirals: V.Ia. Chichagov, A.S. Greig, S.K. Greig, A.I. Kruz, P.S. Nakhimov, K.G. Nassau-Zigen, I.A. Povalishin, O.M. de Ribas, F.F. Ushakov. Appendix includes the statute governing the order. Bibliography.
