This is a biography of Viacheslav Shishkov (1873-1945), the author of several novels about the history of Siberia, who became a Russian classic for his novel "Ugrium-Reka". His professional work as a hydraulic engineer, prospector, and land surveyor helped him to travel Siberia far and wide, and to learn its people from different social circles. "Ugrium-reka" is the story of a merchant family, but it is also a panorama of various types of people who found themselves in this new land: conquerors, religious dissidents, and prisoners. Shishkov survived all the cataclysms of the Bolshevik regime, and was even treated kindly by Stalin, but he preserved his identity, faith, and morality of the old Russian intelligencia.
