This is the last book by the outstanding Russian historian of literature Vadim Erazmovich Vatsuro (1935-2000). Vatsuro is best known as a Pushkinist and a specialist in Lermontov, Karamzin, and the poetry of Pushkin`s age. His main areas of interest were Russian lyrics, literary life, history of publishing and censorship in the 19th century. This book is about the so called Gothic novel: European literature of the eighteenth which was popular in literary salons of London and St. Peterburg, Paris and Moscow. The collection of articles is about the ties between the Gothic European (mostly German, French, and English) novels and Russian literature of the 18th century: perception, translations, influence and parallels.
