This monograph is about the interaction between Russian Orthodox tradition and the imperial cult in the frame of forming the city culture of St. Petersburg in the eighteenth century. The author focuses on the semantics of state-Church ceremonies in Orthodox churches, combining features of Church and court rituals in one, in particular on the way they used singing and bell chimes. Most of space is taken by the chapter on the history of singing in city churches, archbishops` houses, and in monasteries, as well as in the imperial domestic chapels. Supplement includes life stories of 500 St. Petersburg church choral singers. Bibliography. Comments. Irina Chudinova, professor of the Central European University and scholar of the Russian Institute of Art History at St. Petersburg.
