The rebellion of 1773-1775 led by Emel`ian Pugachev was traditionally considered as a peasant war until this monograph. The war covered a huge territory of Russia, and the rebels took control over several relatively large towns. This work studies the participation and role of town dwellers, including merchants and craftsmen, in Pugachev`s revolt. Special attention is paid to the expectations and mood of the merchants and how they were reflected in rebels` manifestos, actions and decrees. Maia Kurmacheva is a researcher at the Institute of History (Moscow). Geographic index.
