The Tomsk fortress (founded in 1604) located in the foothills of Altai was one of the first military centers of Russian colonization of Siberia. The next step was taking over the Alai mountain range with its rich deposits of precious and non-ferrous metals. Akinfii Demidov (1678-1745), the famous owner of mines and metallurgical works, started a new business which needed protection from nomads. This book is about the history of various military forces (voinstvo), including Cossacks, guarding mines and metallurgical plants, their structure and functions, and their relations with local authorities and business. This monograph by well known Siberian historians opens a new page in the history of Siberian colonization. Bibliography (pp. 219-229).
