The Order of St. George was one of the highest Russian military orders. It was founded in 1769 by Catherine the Great. St. George, protector of warriors, was one of the most honored saints in Russia. The story of his victory over the dragon is one the most popular in Old Russian literature. The order also had two unofficial but very common names: Soldatskii Georgii (Egorii) and Georgievskii Krest. This book include biographical sketches of all the cavaliers of the order.
