The author is the grandson and namesake of one of the Decembrists. This writing first was published in 1922. The author collected rich archival material, but after the October Revolution the documents were confiscated and destroyed; he remembered its content, and utilized family legends and memoirs. It embraces the period from the late 18th century to the early 20th century including: the lives of relatives; description of the Russian aristocratic milieu after the Napoleonic wars; the history of the Decembrist movement, of the exile and the return of his grandfather and grandmother from Siberia. The memories contain many interesting details that aren’t provided by other testimonies; very important are the author’s observations on the cardinal differences between the Decembrists and later generations of Russian revolutionaries.
