The obscene ballad Barkov`s Shadow, written by Pushkin in the lyceum (1814-1815), was largely known until this publication in inaccurate and anonymous versions. This monograph identifies the original text of the poem and attributes it to Aleksandr Pushkin. The poem is provided with extensive textological, linguistic, biographical and other historical comments. One chapter includes works on the history, language and poetics of Russian obscene burlesque from Barkov to Pushkin; establishes the connection of this genre with French frivolous literature of the 17th-18th century, as well as with Russian folklore.
