This is the second editions of the first book on the subject since 1917. Bell ringing was practically forbidden during the Communist regime. Chimes have been revived during the last decade; a new branch of musicology, called “Kampanologiia” started in 1980s. There are two kind of bell chimes: traditional, connected with Orthodox Church rituals, and a modern concert form. The first part of the book is a study of Russian bell ringing history, the second, named “Kampanarii” is an explanatory dictionary of special bell ringing terms. Thematic calendar, select bibliography and Russian discography. Supplements include samples of bell scores and scores of Chimes of Spaso-Efimovsk monastery (Suzdal`). Comments. Sergei Tosin (b. 1953) is a professor of Novosibirsk Conservatory in music theory and an outstanding expert on the history of ancient and modern Russian chimes.
