The “Excerpts”, a book in its own right, which for Gogol marked a turning point in his spiritual development, was met coldly both by the general public and the clergy, and Belinski’s low opinion about it was the determining one for many generations to come. Gogol’s inner crisis, the fruit of which was “The Excerpts” resulted from the conflict between his religious aspirations and literary genius. This book details research on the complicated history of the comprehension of Gogol`s letters since it`s publication in 1846. Iu. Margolis analyzes the interpretations of the letters by V.G. Belinsky and N.G. Chernyshevsky, by reformers of the late 19th and liberals of the early 20th century, and by today`s political movements. (The book by N. Gogol` is available (011840)).
