This textbook contains samples from works by M. Bulgakov, I. Babel, B. Zaitsev, E. Zamiatin, M. Zoshchenko, Vs. Ivanov, B. Pil`niak, B. Pasternak, A. Platonov, and A. Fadeev. Each chapter briefly introduces the author, includes a text to be studied, and offers a circumstantial commentary. A separate section contains texts with assignments to be completed by students on their own. The authors selected represent an "esthetic" type of narration as opposed to a "communicative" one (the latter represented by Bunin, Andreev, and Kuprin). In linguistics this translates into an opposition between the concepts of literature as a fact of oral vs. written culture. The esthetic (personal) approach entails the abundant use of tropes enabling an author to create his own world model. Bibliographic references.
