The Volga Germans first settled in Russia in the 18th century under Catherine the Great and prospered as a separate entity. In 1918 they were granted autonomy, but lost it in 1941, the year Russia entered into the war against Germany. During the collectivization of the 1930s the Volga Germans were targeted for extermination as the most thriving segment of Russian peasantry. In this first book of two the author, one of the most influential partisans of German autonomy within the Russian Federation, reconstructs the history of his people bringing it to March 1991, when the 1st German Congress of the USSR was convened. Based on documents, literary sources, and oral accounts. Contains name index.
