The authors analyze problems of plot evolution and study the development of certain themes in historical perspective. The chronology extends from the early 18th century to the present. The 18th and early 19th centuries provided many new themes for Russian belles-letters including deliberate borrowings from world literature and transforming folk writings into literary form. This volume considers, among others, the motif of crime and punishment in Russian literature; the historic roots of the motif of a masquerade; the experience of miracles in anecdotes about Peter the Great; origins of Russian tales by B.A. Levshin, a poetical myth about Aleksandr the First, the semantic roots of the plot Man, Wife and Lover; etc. Bibliographical references.
