These works of one of the most prominent Russian historians Evgenii V. Tarle (1874-1955) were very dangerous for their author at the time of the Stalinist persecutions. The first, Essay on the History of Colonial Politics of the West European Countries (embraces the period from the time of Christopher Columbus to the beginning of 19th century) couldn’t be published during the author’s life; another, Europe in the Imperialist Epoch: 1871-1919, published in 1927, was one of the causes for his arrest and exile to Central Asia. The tragic destiny of both monographs is told in the introduction by Ia. Krantsfel’d. Also included is an essay about the foreign policy of the famous Russian statesman Count Sergei Iu.
