Volume 1 (ISBN 5862181822) is a reprint of the edition of 1911, 1916. It discusses antiquity and its influence on later culture (Iphigenia, Antigone, Nietzsche, the origins of comedy, etc. Extensive supplements develop the following topics: “Wundt and the psychology of language”, “The Literary rose and its fate”, “Criminal prosecution 20 centuries ago”, “The Character of ancient religion compared to Christianity”, “In memory of I.F. Annenski”, “VINCE, SOL”. Volume 2 (ISBN 5862181830) is a reprint of the edition of 1911, 1922. The first part, “The Competitors of Christianity”, considers trends of ancient thought and religion that answered, more or less, the same human needs as Christianity and, for this reason, had to fight it. The second part includes articles on world literature combined under the name “Men of the Renaissance”. These pieces tell about the people of art who, in one way or the other, restored antiquity in their life and works. Considered here are Dante, Shakespeare, Schiller, and Byron.
