This collected work studies various trends and moments in the development of the East European avant-guard in the 1920s-1930s: The notions of pure “construction” and a more discretionary “composition” developed by positivist-oriented Constructivists presaged the future appearance of Surrealism; The links between linguo-poetic, on the one hand, and sculptural-picturesque art forms, on the other; The German, Russian, and Czech expressionism and its Nietzcshean attributes; The initial significance of Picasso’s “thingness” for Czech art, which later shifted towards the primitivism of Henri Rousseau; The theory of Unism elaborated by the Polish artist Strszeminski in an effort to overcome the Baroque combat of lines and colors.
