Prince Gavriil Gagarin (1745-1807), an eminent statesman of Catherine the Great`s and Pavel the First`s time, had a stormy and interesting life in which Masonry blended together with government activity, commerce with refined dissipation, religiosity with voluptuousness. Gagarin spent his last years in his estate Bogoslovskoe, where he wrote a book of repentance about the sins of his life. This book consists of two parts. The first includes his erotic poetry, chapter two is his diary and religious and philosophical thoughts of his last years, which gave the title to the book. Also added to the book are some of Gagarin`s letters, his two essays, and an afterword by S. Suchkov. This is the first publication of all the texts included in the book.
