Staurography, an auxiliary historical discipline, studies the history and symbolism of the cross as a fundamental sacred object of Christianity. The series is published by mutual efforts of the Moscow Russian Orthodox patriarchy and the Russian State Archive. This third volume publishes an outstanding work by John of Kronstadt "On the Cross of Christ". The rest of the collection is taken by articles about crosses worn under clothes - objects of personal worship; arrangements of monasteries in the epoch of Patriarch Nikon and their crosses inside and on top of the churches. The collection also includes a bibliography on staurography. Also included are articles about attribution and classification of personal crosses from the Russian museums. Reviews and bibliographic references. Richly illustrated. Standing order and previous volumes are available.
