F. Dostoevskii along with 20 other members of the group of intelligentsia led by M. Petrashevskii was sentenced to death in 1849 for antigovernment activity, which was later replaced by “katorga,” penal servitude. Dostoevskii considered his experience in katorga as the most important period for his spiritual development and maturity. He evolved from a revolutionary to a monarchist and from an atheist to a believer. This book is about his participation the Petrashevskii group, arrest, sentence, and years in a Siberian camp.
