At that time it was a small frontier fortress in the powerful state of Bulgaria in the Volga region. From the mid 15th to the mid 16th century Kazan was the capital of the Kazan Khanate. The town was rich and beautiful and impressed the contemporaries with the strength of its walls, its Kremlin, and the splendor of its palaces and mosques.
