Abkhazia, an autonomous republic in the Russian part of the Caucasus with a population of one half million and more than 100 ethnic groups, is one of the five unrecognized states in the current structure of the CIS. The other fifteen are legitimate members of the international community. Aleksandr Krylov, a historian and author of many works on the history and culture of Abkhazia, studied the social changes that happened in the republic after the dissolution of the USSR, as well as historical events and facts of the Soviet period which changed the traditional Abkhasian social institutions and traditions: property, family, worship, etc.
