This book is about the history of signing a letter of protest against the lack of transparency in the trial of the four journalist-volunteers, A.I. Ginzburg, Iu.T. Galanskov, A.A. Dobrovol’skii, and V.I. Lashkova, accused of taking notes and releasing the minutes of the trial of two Russian writers: A. Siniavskii and Iu. Daniel`. The letter was signed by 46 scholars from the first academic town in Russia near city of Novosibirsk in 1968. This book includes documents from the local party archives and memoirs of the participants of the signing. It is not only about this particular action, which attracted a lot of attention in Western countries, but also about the protest movement among the academic circles and the punishment they received. Ivan Kuznetsov (b. 1950) is a professor of history at the Novosibirsk University.
