This monograph deals with the cultural history of the Bashkir from the archaic period to the twentieth century. The author substantiates the idea of the unity of European and Asian features in the Bashkir culture. Primary attention is paid to the process of islamization which has determined the people`s mentality, a particularly ornamental mode of thinking. It reveals itself in various spheres of culture, namely in the Qur`anic cantillation, caligraphy, musical folklore, applied forms, mosque architecture, and oral and written literature. Side by side with islamization the phenomena of Europeanization which grew within Islam as the jadidism movement also are described. Oral musical traditions are described in the this double sided context. The tradition of worship recitation is analyzed for the first time in connection with Bashkir folk music. Contents and summary in English.
