The unfolding of the Chernobyl catastrophe and the heroic effort of those who cleaned up the mess has already been recorded minute by minute. The consequence of the catastrophe for the vast territories of Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine have been studied in detail. However, there is something missing in the picture: information on the valiant logistic effort on the part of the local administration of the city of Pripyat and its environs when abandoned by their superior authorities: distributing funds, using abandoned transport, providing food for workers, etc. The tone of this chronicle is matter-of-fact, with some bitterness toward the “kindness” of officials.
