The North Caucasus region is the meeting point of two geopolitical areas with different historically shaped interests: those of Russia and Islam. At present when external Russian power has attenuated, while that of Islam is still emerging, conflicts among various ethnic and religious groups has become the main sources for instability in the region. This is a collection of studies on the structure of kinship, the ways in which authority is passed, and everyday religious life. The research was conducted by a multi-disciplinary team. The authors tried to shed light on the relationship between religion and social and political structures, and to collect critical information for comparative studies in Muslim regions.
