The letters are dated 1904-1928 and cover the artistic and intellectual life of St. Petersburg and Paris. Smirnov will become a recognized Russian specialist in the history of Western European literatures and translator, Sonia will marry painter Robert Delaunay and become herself a well known painter of the avant-garde movement.
