The first of six volumes on the history of Russian culture in the end of 19th - early 20th century. The series was prepared by historians of Moscow University. The present volume includes essays on the culture of towns, estates and villages on the threshold of the 20th century. Towards the end of the 19th century many cultural differences between the capitals and provincial centers became blurred, while villages remained strongholds of peasant tradition. Russian estates reflected, to the greatest degree, the personality and tastes of generations of owners. As the nobility gradually lost money and their estates disintegrated, they were replaced by merchants who brought on initiative and, often, their love of the arts. Bibliographical references.
