Lev Mekhlis (1889-1941) was a member of the Stalin`s political elite for almost 25 years: his personal assistant, chief editor of the newspaper "Pravda", chief of the Main Political Department of the Red Army (Glavnoe Politicheskoe Upravlenie) during the Russian-Finnish war and later up to 1941. He was one of very few of Stalin`s comrades-in-arms who died in his own bed. The author showed Mekhlis as a member of Stalin`s "shadow" political elite, an alter ego of Stalin, as one of the creators of Stalin`s cult and dictatorship. The second edition of the book includes some changes and additional materials. Bibliographic references and supplements.
