The main part of the book is taken by a memoir of Pavel Vasil`evich Chichigin, Admiral and Minister of the Navy (1807-1811), a participant in several Russian wars and many sea voyages and expeditions of 1764-1790s. The third part of the book is a memoir of Leonid Mikhilovich, grandson of Pavel Chchigin, officer and later a Metropolitan of the Russian Orthodox Church who translated his grandfather` diaries into Russian and prepared them for publication. His work was continued by one of Leonid`s granddaughters Abbess Serafima. This book, a result of the work of four generations of the family, is a valuable source on the reigns of Catherine the Great, Pavel I, and Aleksandr I. Name and geographical indices.
