Russian mass media of the end of the 20th - early 21st centuries were full of advertisements for healing practically all diseases with the help of magic. This unusual rise of sorcery and charlatanism testified to the loss of prestige of official medicine. What were the sources of this credibility crisis? The author and compiler of this book shows the first traces of this crisis in the biography of once well known professor of medicine Grigorii Zakhar`in (1829-1897) who laid the basis of the commercialization, dehumanization and profanation of the doctor`s profession and position in society. This book is about relations among the medical community with Russian society. Among contributors to this anthology of memoirs are very well known doctors and scholars of the 19th-20th centuries. Also included is a biography of G. Zakhar`in (pp. 369-607). (0.735 kg.)
