The book by Francis Dvornik (1893-1975), a well-known specialist in Byzantium and Slavic studies, studies the development of Byzantine conceptions about formation of the church as an institution. It also covers questions about the role of the apostolic principle in that process, in particular, the legend about Saint Andrew as a founder of the Constantinopol patriarchy. Using a wide range of sources, the author examines the role of the apostle in the East in the context of the ecclesiastical and political confrontation of the thrones of Rome and Constantinopol. Much attention is paid to the analysis of relationships of the Western and Eastern Churches with secular institutions in the early Middle Ages, and to the issue of the connection between administrative organization of Byzantine Empire and Church jurisdiction.
