Among the numerous folk arts in the USSR, some have been very little studied so far. Most of these artistic groups and genres are relatively young, and are located primarily in cities around universities and other schools. The urban new wave of art was also called "informal or unofficial" art versus the official one engaged in the state political life and ideology. This book contains essays about several different genres of amateur art: music, mime, dance and theater, bard song, bands, folklore, painting and photo groups. Many famous modern Russian artists began as amateurs in these groups. The book was prepared by scholars of the State Institute of Art history.
