This is a collection of eight articles about Aleksandr Danilovich Menshikov (1673-1729), a famous courtier and comrade-in-arms of Peter the Great. He made a dazzling career from a peddler who sold pastries in the streets of Moscow to “his Highness Lofty Prince” and “Generalissimo” and won impressive victories in the Northern War of 1700-1721. After Peter’s death in 1725 he became de facto ruler of Russia under the dowager Empress Katherine I and Peter II (1715-1730). In 1727 through the efforts of rivals he was exiled. This collection deals with Menshikov`s houses and palaces, the celebration and festive innovations adopted under his rule. Numerous illustrations. Bibliographic references.
