The route from the Varangians to the Greeks is described in the Tale of Temporal Years (Povest` Vremennykh Let), the primary Russian chronicle allegedly composed by Nestor in the early 12th century. It was not only material treasures that the Russians and Varangians received from the Greeks, but also the spiritual ones of the culture of the Middle Ages. According to the author of this book this route never existed and the Tale is dated not from the 12th century but later when the "Varangian theory" of the formation of the Russian state was created. He based his conclusions on vast archeological data and the results of the expedition “Khol`mgard” (1994, 1996). The book covers the results of these expeditions. This conclusion casts doubt on the whole Varangian theory and discusses some other historic versions of the origin of the Russian state. (0.285 kg.)
