The first two secret security services in Russia was created by Peter the First: Preobrazhenskii Prikaz and Tainaia Kantseliariia. No matter how they were called later, they all investigated crimes against the state and the crown, and were directly subject to the monarch. Most of "crimes" were direct or indirect insults of the monarch. This book is about everyday life of the Russian secret services and the characters who voluntarily cooperated with them or were paid for their service. It is written by two historians and is based on numerous historical documents. The book includes many stories about famous and not so famous Russian characters who were persecuted by the secret services.
