W. Brumfield, professor of Slavic Studies (Tulane University) studies the social and ethical issues in Russian classic literature of 1860-1880s (F. Dostoevskii, I. Turgenev, etc.) in connection with the personal experience of the writers. The second part of this book is about a little studied Russian writer Vasilii Sleptsov (1836-78) whose main topic was the fate of "ranochinets". The book includes an interesting story of Sleptsov`s famous commune (Panaeva, Uspenskii, Zhukovskaia, etc.). Bibliography.
